Living in Ipswich – Solo Exhibition at the Ipswich Art Gallery 2020-2021
The urban fabric of Ipswich is beautiful and unique. There are really splendid historical homes, but also many wonderful everyday Queenslanders of varying age and condition lived in by local people, and it is these homes and their occupants that interest me the most. I have focused on the people living in the Queenslander homes which are not necessarily marked as heritage and look at how the occupants of these homes interact with them.
Ipswich has a very different flavour from Brisbane. There are varying and sometimes rather negative perceptions of what living in Ipswich is really like from those who live outside. I would like to be able to show a different view of what creates the unique Ipswich flavour. Working with clay and capturing these "snapshots" in ceramics.
My aim is to capture the essence of the homes that reflect the lives of people living there, and to create a ceramic record of “living in Ipswich” in 2019/2020. Although I am dealing with the now, the historical context is also very important in my work as the homes and the people who live there have histories and stories.
