Ipswich Mental Health Unit - All the Birds Singing
The large off-shutter concrete wall adjacent to the entrance of the building offered a perfect backdrop for the installation of ceramic and mosaic, being highly visible as one approaches the building and helping mark the entrance.
My concept was to create a metal “rock strata” inspired by the organically curved lines in the sandstone rocks of the area, specifically seen at the Spring Mountain White Rock Conservation Estate. This rock strata climbs the wall, both providing a frame or grid on which to hang the ceramic and mosaic elements as well as countering the strong vertical lines in the concrete wall finish. The metal strata is finished in earthy and terra cotta colours.
The ceramic and mosaic elements grow on the metal rock strata, representing a life force creeping and growing up the side of the building, sprouting new life. The ceramics and mosaics are contained in circular ‘pods’ which serve to protect the ceramic pieces, the circular shape symbolising life, protection, wholeness and containment.
The ceramic and mosaic elements are inspired by native plant forms and birds. The idea of new green shoots growing out of the rock face indicates strength and resilience and hope. Native birds look out from secure hollows within the rock face and are ready to take off and fly. This indicates the security of the strong rock strata which is secure and stable, and the ability to use this strength from which to grow and fly free.
