A short video showing the process of making a large mosaic and ceramic mural with Jane du Rand

The Process

To produce commissioned artwork I usually start with a brief from a client. The brief can be detailed or open, I prefer being able to interpret the brief my own way, but will always aim to create a design that will live well and suit the space it is intended for. I produce a detailed drawing or drawings for approval, these are most times hand drawn watercolours but sometimes I produce a computer rendering if the project calls for the approach. The next stage is to make up the work in my studio. The making part takes the longest, I will hand make special ceramic pieces and glaze and fire them. I will source the colours and textures of ceramic and glass mosaic tiles that work for the project and then hundreds and thousands of small mosaic pieces then need to be cut and stuck into place. When the work is ready I will transport it to the site and install it onto the wall or floor or whichever surface it has been designed for.
