The Program

Sunday

We will start with a meet-and-greet dinner and drinks where Jane will present a slide show of some of the large-scale projects she has done around the world, talking through the processes involved in creating these works.

Day 1: Monday

We will start with design, and as we will be using the environment to inform our work we will start the day by taking a walk through Braeside Park, a 310 hectare conservation park close to The Kiln Room which includes red gum grasslands, heathland and wetlands. While there we will be sketching and photographing what we see. Sketching and photographing what we see. We will work through the design process, towards developing an overall concept and plan for individual artworks in our exhibition looking at ideas of scale and translating ideas into 3-dimensional ceramics and mosaics. We will enlarge our designs to full scale and look at materials needed, and how we will plan our time to achieve the goal of completing the work.

Day 2: Tuesday

This will be a ceramic day. We will look at what ceramic pieces we will be making for the design, and start to make these. We can see which elements are repeat elements and you will learn how to make moulds for these which will be yours to keep. We will also make some individual pieces for our artworks.

Day 3: Wednesday

Now we will start working on the mosaic part of the artwork. You will learn about making colour choices, look at tile types, (glass, ceramic, smalti) and tile shapes and what is best to use for our design. We will learn tile cutting and placing.

Day 4: Thursday

Today we will glaze the ceramic pieces we have made. Jane will show you how to use underglazes, stains and oxides, as well as coloured glazes and the different effects you can achieve. We will look more broadly at colour and ways of using colour in ceramics as well as different surface decoration techniques. Pie Bolton will be able to answer any questions relating to kilns and firing, she will be able to show you her range of 9 different kilns and how using different firing processes affect the ceramic pieces you make.

Day 5: Friday

This is an important “catch-up” day before the final finishing frenzy! Students will be able to finish off any ceramic, glazing or mosaic work they feel they haven’t had enough time with as well as contributing to the group project.

Day 6: Saturday

This will be a day working on our mosaics and incorporating some of the fired pieces we have made. The mosaic process is time consuming and so it will be great to have a day to focus on finishing the pieces we are making.

Day 7: Sunday

Our last day will include grouting the finished artworks and cleaning them and displaying them in the gallery space. We will have a small exhibition opening with our family and friends to celebrate a job well done!
